Join us to celebrate International Archives Day, 9 June 2016!

Archives, Harmony and Friendship | www.internationalarchivesday.org | #IAD16

UCD Archives, UCD Digital Library, UCD Special Collections and the National Folklore Collection UCD (the four cultural heritage units which now form part of UCD Library) are planning a twitter campaign to celebrate International Archives Day on 9 June.

The International Council on Archives (www.ica.org) launched International Archives Day in 2007 (ICA was created under the auspices of UNESCO, on 9 June 1948). The purpose of the day is to celebrate and promote the range and diversity of archival collections around the world and to encourage engagement with archival materials by as wide an audience as possible.

All four repositories will tweet throughout the day with images of, or links to, items in our collections.

UCD Archives has chosen letters and recollections from Roger Casement, Sidney Cziral, Michael MacWhite, Bernard O’Rourke and ee cummings, recalling and acknowledging friendships. Some were written in prison and speak of both the solidarity and fellowship found among prisoners as well as the poignancy of friendship forged in adversity. Others demonstrate a lifetime of knowing another person.

UCD Digital Library has chosen a broad range of items now available online, mostly depicting Ireland’s built heritage and landscape as well as ballads, all reflecting aspects of our shared communities and culture. A letter from Gerard Manley Hopkins provides an insight into his thought processes.

UCD Special Collections has chosen some fascinating handwritten dedications in books from figures such as James Joyce, Donn S. Piatt and W.B. Yeats. A section from the manuscript of Thomas Hardy’s Return of the Native demonstrates that love and friendship are not always harmonious!

The National Folklore collection has chosen wonderful photographs, art works, links to pages from the Schools Collection and from music recordings, all demonstrating friendship, co-operation and the camaraderie of making music.

Please join us throughout the day on twitter on 9 June and retweet and comment on what you discover! Follow #IAD16 and see not just what we are doing but what our colleagues around the world are doing.
