UCDA has been awarded a grant of €14,660 under the Irish Research Council Government of Ireland ‘New Foundations’ Scheme 2016 for a project entitled ‘The finest men alive’: documents of imprisonment and protest, 1916-17″. The project outcomes will be a Google Cultural Institute online exhibition and a published catalogue of letters and diaries written by those imprisoned in Irish and British jails following the 1916 Rising until the General Amnesty in June 1917 and the letters and propaganda material written and prepared by Irish women on behalf of those imprisoned. The documents will all come from collections held in UCD Archives. The project aims to expand the focus of the Decade of Centenaries from events to sources and to use original sources as more than illustrations for commemorative events.
